LEXiTRON ™ (เล็กซิตรอน) is a Thai <-> English dictionary produced by the National Computer and Electronics Center, Thailand (NECTEC). There are two versions of the dictionary (sound / no sound) that you can download and install for free.

LEXiTRON is maintained by Thai staff and its users can suggest new words and definitions. This may explain how some of the more unusual words, spellings and sometimes vulgar slang has worked its way into the dictionary. B2S – Books Music Stationery

B2S (Thai: บี ทู เอส) is a retail chain operated by Central Retail Corporation in Thailand. It addition to selling books and magazines, its many branches also stock children’s stationery, general office supplies, executive pens, electronic dictionaries, calculators, music CDs, and movies in VCD and DVD format. It is a mid-range retailer similar to WH Smith in the United Kingdom.

B2S serves mostly the local Thai market and its smaller branches have a limited choice for foreign customers. Publications include

B2S at Central World

B2S at Central World (located in Central Court C, next to Isetan) has a reasonable selection of fiction and non-fiction books in English language, but nearby branches of Kinokuniya and Asia Books stock a much better range for most foreign visitors.

The Central World branch of BTS occupies three floors. The first floor stocks comics, toys, music and movies. There is a listening station where customers can listen to music before making purchases. Thai music CDs cost about 140 – 180 baht whereas foreign titles (popular music, jazz, classical and opera) cost about 300 – 800 baht.

Warning of terrorist threat in Bangkok

The American Embassy in Bangkok has released a warning (Friday 13 January 2012) that “foreign terrorists may be currently looking to conduct attacks against tourist areas in Bangkok in the near future”. The advisory warns US tourists to exercise caution when visiting public areas of Bangkok popular with Western tourists.

Specific areas are not mentioned but are likely to include major hotels, shopping malls (e.g. Siam Paragon, Central World and areas surrounding Pratunam Market), Khao San Road, and popular red light districts including Nana and Silom.

Kiwi, 30, dies after night with two prostitutes in Patong

An overweight New Zealand male has died after spending the night with two sex workers in Patong, Phuket. “We found two used condoms and a sex stimulant in the man’s room,” reported Lieutenant Jakapong.

The man was found dead at Keeta Guest House (Thai: คีตา เกสเฮ้าส์).

5-metre waves hit Chumphon, Southern Thailand

Five-metre waves are reported to have hit three districts of Chumpon province in Southern Thailand. According to news reports, the waves resulted from intense high pressure and rain storms.

BANGKOK, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) — Five meter waves hit three sub- districts in Thailand’s southern Chumpon province’s Langsuan district on Sunday noon, destroying several houses, bungalows and restaurants and forcing local residents to flee their homes.

The seawater also flooded Hua Lame village in Langsuan district with approximate height of 70 centimeter, forcing people to evacuate to a temple seen as a safe shelter. Continue reading
