The Thai government has become the first to publicly back the new Twitter censorship policy. According to the Guardian newspaper (article link), ICT Minister, Jirawan Boonperm, called Twitter’s decision to allow country-specific blocking a “welcome development”.
In what may be seen by some as an Orwellian move, the Thai government could make requests to hide certain messages from Internet users in Thailand. This is likely to include messages that would break Thailand’s strict lese-majeste laws designed to project the Thai royal family from defamatory and adverse publicity.
