Sam Yan Market (ตลาดสามย่าน) is located close to Chulalongkorn University and MBK, about half way between MRT Hua Lamphong and MRT Sam Yan. The market is housed in a modern two-storey building, with a fresh market on the first (ground) floor and many Thai restaurants selling beef, chicken, pork and fish steak on the second floor. The second floor is popularly known as Sam Yan Steak (สามย่านสเต็ก).

Meals at Sam Yan Steak are cheap (starting at about 70 Thai baht) with large platters available for about 400 baht. Soft drinks, beer and ice is cheap and presumably priced to attract Thai students from the nearby university.

Most of the shops have a menu with pictures, and most foreign visitors would have no problem ordering food. However, the menu is definitely aimed at the Thai market and most steaks come with sickly sauces, sub-standard French fries and a “salad” of shredded white cabbage and mayonnaise. That’s unfortunate because even the cheap beef steaks seem to be surprisingly edible.

Our verdict, about 2/10 (English) and 5/10 (Thai).

Today we visited the Train Market (ตลาดนัดรภไฟ) (pronounced dt-laad nad rot-fai) in the hope to buy some second-hand and possibly collectable bargains.

We had read online that the market opens at 2pm on Saturday and Sunday, but when we arrived at 3pm this was clearly bad information. If you are a buyer, do not arrive before 5/6pm at the earliest. We took a taxi back to nearby Chatuchak Market (the weather was hot!) but then returned on foot later in the evening.

The Train Market is apparently sited next to some old train tracks although we didn’t see them. The market has hundreds of stalls selling T-shirts, bags, sunglasses and fake designer goods which you can find anywhere in Thailand. More interestingly, it has about 200 stalls, small shops and car-boot sellers offering second hand and “vintage” goods including clothing and other items that could be used to recreate a retro look. It also had a lot of junk — the sort of stuff that you’d find at any car boot sale in England. Continue reading »
