Bangkok City Hall is to become a new public library and museum after the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) relocates to a new facility in Din Daeng district.

The old city hall should provide spacious accommodation for a substantial library and museum facility. Bangkok governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra has already approved the change of use and the BMA will be seeking a firm to design the museum and library as soon as next month.

Here are some photos from an old visit that I made to the King Prajadhipok Museum in Bangkok. I haven’t been there for a couple of years, but it made for an interesting and pleasant visit.

If you are a new visitor to Thailand, you may never have heard of Soi Suan Phlu or Sathorn Road, but “old-timers” will recognise it as the location of the old Immigration Office before it moved to its new home at Chaengwattana.

The reason I mention these places is that I rarely visit the area but it would still be worth a trip for the lovely home and gardens of M.R. Kulkrit (บ้าน ม.ร.ว. คึกฤทธิ์). The house is open to individual members of the public and is also available for group tours and banquets. It’s a beautiful place to take photos and relax in the gardens.

The Rare Stone Museum (พิพิธภัณฑ์หินแปลก) moved to a new location in Pathum Thani (ปทุมธา๊นี) at the end of 2008. As its name suggests, the museum houses a collection of rare and unusual stones. It also contains a small collection of other items including fossils, ashtrays, lighters, phallic objects (used for good luck in Thai culture) and art. The museum is located next to a major road about six kilometers from Future Park Rangsit, and with basic instructions is not difficult for independent visitors to find.

Varadis Palace (วังวรดิศ) (pronounced: wang wa-ra-did) is the former residence of Prince Damrong in Bangkok, Thailand. Located close to Thanon Lan Luang (ถ.หลานหสวง) the palace is positioned within easy reach of Sanam Luang and Wat Phra Kaew.

The beautifully decorated palace now serves as a museum, gallery and library but access is unfortunately limited to large groups of at least 50 visitors by prior arrangement.
